Welcome to the IMPROV website

High power and in particular tuneable mid-infrared short pulse laser systems operating in the wavelength range between 3 µm and 11 µm have a large potential in different applications, e.g. analytics, medicine and micromaching. Up to now, those systems are only be realized by multistage set-ups consisting of bulk four or five different units, a configuration which is of course very complex, expensive with low efficiency operation. This situation has not changed over the last years but now with IMPROV a solution seems to appear.

The acronym IMPROV stands for Innovative Mid-infrared high Power source for Resonant ablation of Organic photoVoltaic devices. It is a collaborative project funded over three years by the European Commission within its 7th Framwork Programme. In this project, researchers from seven European institutes and companies are forming a well-balanced consortium, adressing fibre laser systems and related fibre-based components, non-linear frequency conversion stages and the application of this laser source in the production process of organic photovoltaic devices as well.

The competencies of all partners are focused in IMPROV in order to develop a short pulse Thulium-doped fibre laser system operating in the wavelength range around 1.96 µm as a front end pumping a nonlinear frequency conversion stage based on orientation-patterned GaAs crystals. Such laser system will provide tunable laser radiation in the wavelength range between 3 and 10 µm with output energies up to 30 µJ and will be applied in selective structuring and micro-machining of flexible organic polymer layers via Resonant Infrared Ablation.
